Season 3 of the musical comedy-drama fanction series Glee: The New Years aired on September 23, 2012 and concluded on March 15, 2013. The series was renewed for a third season on May 5, 2012 after the Season 2 episode, Cyberbu//y.
The third season solely focuses on the seniors of New Directions: Addison, Carina, Cheyenne, Chuck, Claira, Elizabeth, Elaine, and Levi, and their futures. However, relationships, friendships, and reputations are put at stake at McKinley High School and puts glee club on the borderline. Season 3 continues the darker nature of the second arc of Season 2, featuring controversial topics of religion, domestic abuse in relationships, libel, as well as anxiety and depression.
Season 3 was met with critical acclaim from critics who acknowledged the improvement in writing, praising the season's character development, song covers, and controversial storylines. However, some critics panned the decision to swap the power couples: Dougie and Levi and Carina and Gunner.
This season features fifteen main roles, with twelve of the characters reprising their main roles in Season 2. Rachel Bilson (Anna Clarkson) returns as a main cast member after being demoted to a recurring character in the previous season. Shanice Banton (Shannon Brockwood) was promoted to a regular cast member, prior to being a fan-favorite in Season 2, and newcomer Cam Gigandet (Clyde Andrews) is promoted to the main cast respectively.
